EFCC press release: EFCC arrests 6 suspects for N5.5m bank fraud

Five persons have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegation of fraudulent transfer of a total of N5, 550,000.00(Five Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from an account in Skye Bank. The suspects, Ademola Okunlola, 36; Tajudeen Oluwanisola, 41; Kolawole Adams, 52; Temitope Pedro, 27; Bayo Olowoyo, 39 and Otunba Biodun Adebanjo, 56, were picked up in different locations in Lagos by operatives of the anti- graft agency for allegedly effecting the fraudulent transfer of N5, 550,000.00 from the account of one Ajani Kareem Musibau domiciled in Skye Bank Plc.
The fraudulent transfers took place on March 3, 2014. One of the suspected fraudsters, Ademola Okunlola, a staff of Skye Bank, Ikeja Branch, Lagos, set the stage for the scam when he covertly used his camera phone to capture the photograph and signature specimen of Musibau. He accessed his account and sent the details to another staff of the bank: Bayo Olowoyo at the Toyin Street, Ikeja branch.
The duo reportedly sent Musibau's photograph and signature specimen to a member of their syndicate who effected the money transfer into two accounts: N4.1Million( Four Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira) was moved into Adebajo Biodun Olusola's account with Wema Bank, Shagamu branch, Ogun State while N1,450,000.00( One Million, Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira only) was moved into another account operated by Temitope Pedro with Guaranty Trust Bank, Ikeja branch. Angela Okorie gives own account of theft scandal involving her in SA

I got plenty mails from some guys in South Africa who wanted me to expose Angela Okorie as a thief. They sent me pics, police phone numbers, details of what supposedly happened over there but I didn't touch the story because I suspected they were just trying to mess this lady up...and according to her own version of things, that's exactly what happened. Actress Angela Okorie was arrested and detained for a day in South Africa last weekend for allegedly stealing $3,200 from a friend's home. Reacting to the story to Yes! Magazine, Angela says it was all blackmail from a friend/fan named Prosper, whose sexual advances she turned down and whose stock in trade is to extort money from Nigerians who go to South Africa for project. Find her account of what happened after the cut...
Angela tells Yes Magazine... "I left Nigeria for South Africa to shoot my movie, Nwa Abakaliki in South Africa on Monday April 7 2014 with Prince Ekeh, Muma Gee's husband. I paid for his flight and accommodation from Port Harcourt to Lagos and from Lagos to South Africa. Then at a point, I decided to move to a hotel so as to give him space and a friend of mine called M.K said I should come over to her place at North Gate Estate where I can pay less for my accommodation because she has a 3 bedroom flat. So I moved in and met a friend of mine called Prosper who is actually one of my biggest fans in her place. But he was also living in a separate room with the lady. As time went on, this guy started disturbing me for sex. He said he liked me and would not mind having an affair with me. But I told him I am married with a child but he would not let me be. It got to a stage he went to hire a car to take me around so as to aid my production but I never gave in to his demand for sex. Then on good Friday, April 18th, I was in my room and didn't bother locking my room door. Prosper came in and tried to rape me but I told him that I am ready to kill and go to jail if he ever tried it. After much sweet words and threats, he left me alone and I moved out of the house to Hilton Hotel, Sandton that day. On Sunday, April 19th, Prince Eke called me that Prosper and some people were coming to meet me at the hotel and I said no problem. Unknown to me, he was coming with about three policemen. I opened the door for them but to my greatest surprise, Prosper said that I stole his 32,000rand which is about $3,200. I was surprised because that to me is ridiculous. How can I steal such money when I paid for Prince Ekeh's flight and accommodation which amounts to about $4,000 dollars, not to talk of myself? I was taken to honeydew from where I was moved to Ranburg Police station in Johannesburg on Saturday April 19th and was released the following day, being April 20, 2014, Easter Sunday. Why I am sad about the whole blackmail is that it was after my release that I got to know that Prosper's job in South Africa is to con and defraud new Nigerians in S.A. He would identify strangers who have come with money for a project and offer to assist. Afterwards, he would call the policemen who are also working with him to defraud the innocent people, claiming to have done something for them or that they stole his money. He picked on me because he knows I am a celebrity and would not want to soil my name. I was seriously embittered when I later learnt that Prince Ekeh harbored him in the house I left for him to stay and that he was on the run because I vowed to take the matter in the law court for defamation of character. When the issue became serious, they started begging me, sending different set of people to beg me but I promised them to show them the other side of me because I have not been able to complete my movies since then. Prince Ekeh was even threatening to shoot me; that why would I be telling my friends about the incident and also queried the policemen who gave me my passport. Prince is an ingrate. I paid for his ticket from Port Harcourt to Lagos and from Lagos to South Africa to help him and his family because his wife, Muma Gee has been the only one assisting his career and all he could pay me with is this cheap blackmail. He was not even happy that my passport was released to me. I keep asking myself why? What does he want to achieve? Anyway, I have told him and his accomplice who tried to rape and blackmail me that I am taking this up in a reputable law court" she said

President Jonathan Replies Kwankwaso, You Know You Stole Our Money

Oh dear this is getting interesting. After Kano State governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso called the president out in the pages of Newspapers that he regretted voting for him in 2011 and the president has done barely anything in the country. He also said he wasn’t really welcomed in Kano state, although the president still visited. While welcoming a former governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau to PDP, the president used the medium to address the issue that he read what Kwankwaso said in the papers and people should note that he Kwankwaso is a ‘devil’ Thisday Newspaper reports. Continue after the cut. Buttressing his point, Kwankwaso never voted for me and the vice president, Sambo. As a matter of fact, he walked out of eagle square when it became obvious I will be getting the presidential ticket of PDP, the president said. He also accused the governor of embezzling money meant for the state delegates to the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2011 presidential election, saying he gave nobody one kobo. “The little money that my campaign office provided, Kwakwanso refused to give it to the delegates. “Even for the main election, the little money my campaign office sent to his state to facilitate the movement of people, Kwankwaso refused to give the money to anybody. “How can Kwankwaso tell people that he voted for me?” Jonathan queried. “I read in the newspaper that the governor of Kano State said he regretted voting for me. Let me tell my good people of Kano that Kwankwaso did not vote for me and the vice-president. “We accommodate a lot because we know so much but we talk less,” the president concluded.

Someone Is Trying To Assassinate Me- Lawyer Who Stopped Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge Tollgate Says

On Monday, April 14, 2014, at about 3a.m, armed men stormed my house, at Plots 1-3, Ebun-Olu Adegbouruwa Lane, Itedo, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. They were about eight of them in number. They were well armed with short guns. They scaled through my fence, tied my security man and my driver, at my gatehouse. They asked if the compound belonged to Adegboruwa, if Adegboruwa had a mobile police guard, if Adegboruwa lived alone or had tenants, and whether my neighbour had policemen on patrol. They then started to demolish my window burglaries, they scaled upstairs to my terrace, to break into my living room upstairs, by which time I had already called for help, from the neighbours and from the police. They then tried to gain entrance into my kitchen downstairs, without success. They then descended upon my security man and driver, beat them up mercilessly and started uprooting my burglary with the heavy instruments that they brought. It was at this point that the police arrived, but the police could not gain entrance into my compound, because my security man had been tied. I saw the armed men myself from my location upstairs. They looked very mean and determined, possibly not the usual armed robbers after material things. Continue below. I do believe that this was an assassination attempt upon my life, by the enemies of the people of the masses of Nigeria, and in particular the good people of Lagos State, in the Lekki-Ajah axis. One of my neighbours has since confirmed that he actually saw a car that dropped off these armed men around my fence at about2a.m. They were sent on specific instructions. Nigerians will recall that on March 27, 2014, the Federal High Court, Lagos, delivered judgement in my case with Lagos State to the extent that collection of toll fee on the Lekki Ikoyi bridge is illegal. It was just yesterday, Monday April 14, 2014, that I argued against the request by Lagos State, to stay the execution of the said judgment. Thus, this is just a case of the witch cried yesterday and the child died today. I believe that those who have vested interests in the continued collection of the illegal toll fee are at the bottom of this assassination attempt, as a way of discouraging me or stopping my legitimate struggle against illegality, oppression and all undemocratic tendencies of our governments. I will not give up on this struggle, no matter the intimidation and harassment, that I may face. It is a cause that cannot be stopped. Consequently, I call on Nigerians to hold the Lagos State Government and all those who have vested interests in the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge toll fee, responsible for any harm that may come my way. Our government must be open to legitimate opposition and transparency in their affairs. It is not by attempting to snuff the life out of people, that government will escape its statutory accountability to the people. My life is in the hands of God, therefore I do not fear what man can do to me. I know that ultimately, those who are now after my life, will one day face the Supreme Court of God, where they will have to account for all their misdeeds, including their corruption and misgovernance. This struggle will continue, because I know that victory is certain, through God. Thank you all. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, Esq.

Bus conductor allegedly jumps into Atlantic Ocean after stealing N40,000

A 26-year-old bus conductor, Nurudeen Suleiman, who allegedly jumped into the Atlantic Ocean after stealing N40, 000, was on Tuesday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing before Magistrate Salama Matepo. The prosecutor, SP Austin Orji, said the accused committed the offence on March 30 at about 4.30 p.m. at the Bar Beach on Victoria Island, Lagos. He alleged that the accused had approached the complainant, one Mr Segun for some financial assistance. “The man had brought out some naira notes to give Suleiman and in the process, some fell off. “The accused on the pretext of helping to pick the money kept N40, 000 and handed over the rest to the complainant. “The complainant suspected a foul play and before he knew it, Suleiman had jumped into the Atlantic Ocean to avoid being caught. “He stayed in the ocean for about 30 minutes to allow the divers that had attempted to arrest him leave,’’ Orji said. He said the accused was later apprehended by some security men when he came out. The offence, Orji noted, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Suleiman, however, pleaded not guilty. In his ruling, the magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to April 23.(NAN)

Sanusi floors FG in court, former CBN Governor awarded N50m damages

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Thursday issued a restraining order against the Police, State Security Service (SSS) or their privies, from arresting the suspended CBN Governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Justice Ibrahim Buba gave the order while delivering judgement in a suit filed by Sanusi, seeking an order restraining the police, and the SSS, from infringing on his fundamental rights. Sanusi had filed the suit through his Counsel, Prof Yemi Osibanjo (SAN), seeking an order restraining the Police and SSS from arresting, detaining or otherwise harassing him. Joined as First to Third respondents in the suit are: The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and the SSS. Delivering his judgement on Thursday, Justice Buba dismissed a preliminary objection filed by Dr Fabian Ajogwu (SAN) on behalf of the AGF, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit. Ajogwu had argued that the suit was wrongly instituted before the Federal High court, since the matter bordered on the employment of the applicant, and so, should be within the exclusive jurisdiction of the National Industrial Court. Dismissing the objection, Buba held that the provisions of sections 11 of the Labour Act, cannot take away the jurisdiction bestowed on the FHC by the Constitution. He held that the provisions of sections 251 of the Constitution vest jurisdiction of the Federal high court, to entertain matters touching on enforcement of fundamental human rights. Buba held that the applicant had brought the suit under the provisions of Chapter 4 of the Constitution seeking an enforcement of his rights, and so, is not a dispute relating to his terms of employment. “The averment by respondent that the matter is labour related is far from the truth; the first respondent is trying to set up another case for the applicant; It is a case of “shifting the goal post” and making a case for the applicant. “The facts deposed in the applicant’s originating summons and his affidavit, speaks for itself; it is a suit for enforcement of his fundamental right which is recognisable by the federal high court. “The court allows any person who perceives that his rights are likely to be infringed on, to approach the court for redress” he said The court therefore dismissed the preliminary objection of the AGF, holding that the court had jurisdiction to hear and determine the applicant’s suit. Delivering his judgement on the main suit, the court held that from the totality of averments in the applicant’s originating summons, there is no doubt that the respondents had failed to answer all the questions raised. He held that the first and third respondents, presented conflicting averments in their counter affidavits, which shows that they are not on the same page on the issue, and had acted in bad faith. The averment of the second respondent is frugal, as it stated clearly that they had not been briefed by anyone to investigate or arrest the applicant. “The first respondent laboured to submit that the applicant is not entitled to a grant of perpetual injunction, but this court is of the opinion that for every infraction, the applicant is entitled to a relief. “This court believes that the action of the respondents in this suit, deserves condemnation and exemplary damages. “This court has no doubt that the applicant has made out his case against the respondents, and so, resolves all the issues in favour of the applicant; for the avoidance of doubt, the court makes the following declaratory order: “A declaration that the first respondent acting through the officers of the third respondent or its privies, does not have any power to forcefully withdraw and keep the passport of the applicant for any reason whatsoever. “A declaration that the respondent do not have any power to forcefully withdraw and seize the passport of the applicant, without compliance with section 5 (1) of the Passport Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2004. “A declaration that the forceful seizure and detention of applicant’s passport, is an unlawful violation of his right to freedom of movement, enshrined in section 35 of the 1999 Constitution and article 12 of the Charter on Human and Peoples Right Act. “A declaration that the conduct of respondent acting through the officers of the SSS, in forcefully arresting the applicant without due allegation or suspicion of a crime, is an unlawful violation of his right to personal liberty. “An order of this court is hereby made restraining the respondent, their agents, privies or any other law enforcement agency of the respondents, from further interfering, harassing or infringing on the personal liberty of the applicant. “An order for immediate release to the applicant of his international passport forcefully withdrawn and seized on Feb. 20, is hereby made. “Having granted a restraining order, the order of perpetual injunction cannot be granted because for every infringement, the applicant has a right to come to court. “An exemplary damages against the respondents jointly and severally is also awarded, in the sum of N50 million only. “An order is also made, directing the respondent to make a public apology to the applicant for unlawful arrest, detention and harassment,” Buba held. The court had on Feb. 21, granted an interim order of injunction, restraining the respondents from arresting, detaining, or harassing the applicant, pending the determination of the motion on notice. The interim order was sequel to an affidavit of urgency filed by the applicant on the same date. (NAN)
