2women jailed for trafficking &making children beg with fake wounds

Two women have been arrested and jailed for trafficking children and making them beg on the streets of Lagos with fake wounds. PM News reports The Family Court 1 in Yaba Magistracy has jailed two women for trafficking and using children to beg for alms in Victoria Island area of Lagos. The women, Amarachi Eke from Imo State and Chioma Eze from Awka in Anambra State, were arraigned at the court on Wednesday on a two-count charge of using underaged children to beg for alms. And they pleaded guilty to the charges. Magistrate Y.O. Aje-Afunwa sentenced them to two months imprisonment each; one month for each count charge and they are also to pay a fine of N5,000. The jail terms will run concurrently. In sentencing them, Aje-Afunwa said there was the need for the convicts to learn some useful lessons in prison and that since they were still young, they should engage in something more productive rather than using kids to beg on the street. According to her, they have to learn the hard way in prison not to engage in something bad in the society, believing that the prison would transform their lives for the better. The two women were arrested at Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island recently while begging with two kids, aged six and nine years. The stomach and legs of the kids were plastered with ointment and wool to give the impression that they were suffering from serious burns to attract public sympathy. An Environmentalist, Betty Albert, was driving by and saw the gory sight of the nine-year old boy lying on the ground and decided to assist the victim. She parked her car and came out and told Chioma that she should be allowed to take the boy to the hospital. On hearing this, Chioma asked the boy to run away which he did, but unfortunately, he was caught by a policeman who was on duty nearby. The Environmentalist asked the policeman to chase after the boy and he was caught and brought back to the scene. “I asked the boy whether something was wrong with him and he said he was okay. I asked him whether I could remove the plasters and wool on his stomach and he said yes. So I removed them and found out that the boy was alright. “The boy told me that his younger brother was at Eko Hotel with another woman also begging for alms and that they should help him to get the boy. The boy was brought with the other woman,” Betty explained. The boy’s leg was also plastered with ointment and wool to deceive people that he had been badly burnt and needed help. Investigation revealed that Chioma Eze, from Anambra State, had gone to Awka and told the children’s parents that she wanted to assist them send the children to school in Lagos and she was allowed to take them. But unknown to the parents, their children were brought to beg for alms in Lagos. Betty had been following the case for almost two weeks to ensure justice was done. The women were arrested by police from Bar Beach Police Station, while the case was later transferred to Adeniji Adele Police Station. The case was again transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba where it was charged to court on Wednesday. According to Betty, the in-law of one of the women had been threatening her life because of the way she had pursued the case, alleging that the in-law to Chioma said he had marked her face and would ensure that she was eliminated. The Lagos State Office of Youth and Social Department has been following the case and has expressed disgust at the way the children were ill-treated by the women. Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, said it is lamentable that Anambra State had continued to be a place where people were brought to Lagos to beg for alms. “How can these women be so callous to have brought these children from Anambra State to beg for alms in Lagos? They even make the children feign injury and they don’t have homes in Lagos and now they will say we are deporting their people. What we are saying is that these are things the public won’t know,” he stated. He said Lagos “would not tolerate a situation where Anambra State would continue to infest the state with beggars and later cry wolf that we are deporting people that have no homes to stay in the state.” Badru vowed that the government would go after such people using kids to solicit for alms, while decrying the new strategy now being in used to attract public sympathy, saying it is inhuman to treat kids that way. He said the punishment meted out to the women would serve as deterrent to others who might want to engage in such despicable act.

Missing oil money: Senators differ over Sanusi’s claim

THE disclosure by Central Bank governor, Lamido Sanusi, on alleged missing $20bn oil money from the federation account on Wednesday caused a division between the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Olubunmi Adetunmbi, and a former Chairman, Senate Committee on Senate Services, Emmnauel Anosike. While Adetunmbi said Sanusi’s action was proper and urged Nigerians “to be vigilant in ensuring that the on-going investigation into the allegation gets to its satisfactory conclusion,” Anosike said the CBN governor was lowering his integrity and ‘rubbishing’ the nation’s economy before the international community. Adetumbi said the on-going controversy over the alleged missing fund was a vindication of his position when he first raised the motion on unremitted funds on the floor of the Senate. He said his motion had led to the sequence of events that uncovered the controversial issue of missing funds. He also described as mischievous, insinuations that the CBN governor was acting the script of the opposition. But Anosike, a member of the fifth Senate, warned Sanusi against playing to the gallery. He said, “The CBN governor is playing to the gallery with his recent bombshell. “As the head of a major parastatal in the Federal Ministry of Finance, his first communication should be to the supervising minister, who also doubles as the coordinating minister for the economy. “Coming every month to the National Assembly to give conflicting figures of unremitted oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation does not portray him as a man of integrity. A CBN governor should not be seen always talking in public. Rather, he should concentrate on the regulatory role of CBN. “He should open up a line of communication with his finance minister and stop being used. “His inconsistency is sending wrong signal to the international community about Nigerian economy”. The Senator urged the Senate not to be hasty in its investigation into the matter. According to him, the committee responsible for the probe should critically appraise both the NNPC and CBN books with a view to bringing the issue to a logical conclusion. He also admonished Sanusi to join politics and stop overheating the already charged political environment. Meanwhile, the opposition All Progressives Congress on Wednesday said the Federal Government had been unable to come clean by giving a satisfactory explanation with respect to the unremitted $20bn by the NNPC. Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was sad that the Peoples Democratic Party-led government kept falling from one financial scandal to another with corruption hitting an all time high. He said, “This government has been unable to come clean by giving a satisfactory explanation as per the missing funds. One time it was said to be $49bn then it was revised downwards. “Yesterday, the Central Bank Governor categorically said the NNPC has been unable to account for $20 bn dollars. “This is a government that is swimming in corruption and it seems that their thinking is very simple ‘let them talk, the people will soon forget.’ Nigerians who wallow in poverty and live in hardship will not forget.”

The president of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, is currently being interrogated at the headquarters of the State Security Service in Abuja. Dokubo was invited by the SSS, following his alleged inflammatory statements in connection to the 2015 election, in which he stressed in unequivocal terms that there will be bloodshed, if President Goodluck Jonathan was not re-elected. Dokubo, an ex-militant, arrived the SSS office at about 9.45am on Thursday, with scores of his supporters, and his lawyer. The SSS Deputy Director, Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar, confirmed that it was questioning Dokubo based on the inflammatory comments. Former Lagos Deputy Governor, Alhaja Ojikutu, arrested for fraud

The Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police today Tuesday Feb. 4th arrested former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Aderoju Ojikutu, Sahara Reporters reports. She will appear in court tomorrow in connection with fraudulently obtaining N130million from one Cajethan Okekearu. Mrs. Ojikutu was declared wanted on June 19, 2013, but she went to court to halt police investigations, a suit that was thrown out by a judge a few weeks ago. The SFU police spokesperson Ngozi Isintume-Agu said in a statement that Alhaja Ojikutu, 67, who was picked up at her Lagos Island residence, allegedly connived with one Samson Adebisi Ojikutu Jnr, her son, to commit the offence. Samson is currently in the United States. According to the statement, the former deputy governor and her son “were parties to the sale of the land and both signed the agreement given to the Complainant and obtained the sum of N130 million from him.” The police said the suspect admitted the crime but explained it as a genuine mistake of plot identification. She then refunded the sum of N50 million to the complainant and promised to refund the balance as soon as she had disposed of two other properties she had put up for sale. The statement further said Mrs. Ojikutu has confessed that she injected the complainant’s money into her business. “She equally made an undertaking and payment plan which was drawn from September, 2012 and was to terminate by November 2012, but she defaulted due to lack of fund.” The police further said the deal unraveled when Okekearu, on the verge of completion of development of the land, was accosted by the bona fide owner of the property and it was established that the land that the suspect had sold actually belonged to one Mr. Afolabi. “It was also discovered that the Plot 24 Block 4, which actually belonged to Late Samson Adebisi Ojikutu Snr, the suspect’s husband who died in 2008 was sold by him in 1995 and the suspect was a life witness and appended her signature to the sale of the land. A financial institution (name withheld) which was in possession of the CofO after payment was fully made also tendered the original CofO which the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State had earlier declared missing and even sworn an affidavit to.” The statement recalled that Alhaja Ojikutu had sued the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, SFU, and the complainants, asking the court to restrain the police from further investigations and violations of her fundamental rights. “The ruling by Justice Obadina (Mrs) on 17th December 2013, dismissed the Suit for lack of merit, that the Nigeria Police has the power to prosecute the Applicants, Alhaja Sinatu Aderoju Ojikutu and her son, Sampson Adebisi Ojikutu (Jnr) since the Police investigation revealed that there is prima-facie case of obtaining by false pretences against them and added that the court will not interfere or restrain the Police in carrying out their statutory function,” the statement said. The former deputy governor will be arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday morning.

Gunmen kill Newswatch editor in Lagos

GUNMEN in two Sport Utility Vehicles shot an assistant editor with Saturday Newswatch newspaper, Mr. Toyin Obadina, on Friday in Ikorodu, a suburb in Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt that although the 50-year-old indigene of Ogun State did not die on the spot, he died on Sunday after a surgery to remove the bullets lodged in his stomach. The wife of the deceased, Biola, told our correspondent during an interview at her brother-in-law’s house in Ajuwon, Ogun State on Sunday that her husband did nothing to warrant the attack. Biola, who spoke while fighting back tears, said, “Around 11.30pm on Friday, my husband was on his way back home. As a newspaper editor, he had informed me that he was finishing production late. He told me that on getting to Parafa end of Imota Road, opposite Aico company, two jeeps driving towards him on the other end of the road crossed his vehicle. “He said when he realised that they were bandits, he immediately alighted from the vehicle and told them they could have anything they wanted. They collected all his money from him. He then begged them not to kill him, but one of them slapped him. They then shot him in the stomach. “He attempted to run but he was shot in the stomach a second time before the robbers fled.” PUNCH Metro learnt that some residents gathered around and were able to get a hold of Toyin’s phone. It was learnt that they were able to obtain Toyin’s wife’s number and they informed her to rush down to the scene. She said, “The scene was just about five minutes’ drive from my house, so I pleaded with a neighbour to accompany me and we rode in his car. On getting to the scene, I saw my husband injured. His ash-coloured Toyota Yaris was still at the scene, but we conveyed my husband into the neighbour’s car and drove to Ikorodu General Hospital. “On getting to Ikorodu General Hospital, we were told that the case was severe and we took him in the car to Gbagada General Hospital where we were also told that the case was severe. We finally took him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.” Biola said all through the journey, her husband remained conscious and was even speaking with her in the vehicle. She said the father of her three children was taken into the theatre where a successful surgery was performed on him. “I remained with my husband until 5.30am on Sunday when his brother said I should go home and bring some of his clothes. I was brought to his brother’s house instead and a few hours later, I was told that he gave up the ghost. “I was surprised because the doctors had told us that after the surgery, my husband would feel ill for some days but on the fifth day, they would do a second surgery for him,” she said. PUNCH Metro learnt that the aged and ill mother of the editor had not been informed of her son’s demise as of press time. It was learnt that the victim was survived by three children, the eldest being only 12 years, while the youngest is five. PUNCH Metro also learnt that the matter was being investigated at the Sagamu Road Division of the Nigeria Police Force. The police, it was learnt, were unsure if the incident was an assassination or an armed robbery. However, it was learnt that the gunmen also attacked someone in the same area that night and snatched the driver’s vehicle. Meanwhile, the national and Lagos State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists have condemned Toyin’s murder. In a separate statement issued by its National Secretary, Shuaib Leman, the NUJ described the incident as a reminder of the vulnerability of media professionals and evidence that the Nigerian system had over the years failed to protect its citizens. The chairman, Lagos NUJ, Deji Elumoye, wondered what happened to the billions of naira that had been put into the state’s security trust fund. He said more was needed to be done in the area of security of lives and property.

The suspect allegedly met the Aussie on a dating site and struck a sizzling romantic affair that necessitated him moving to Johannesburg in 2013 to link up with his lover. Omokoh allegedly arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on February 4, 2013, to meet with Jacob who had been in Johannesburg since November 2012. Five days after Omokoh arrived and took up residence with her, Jacob was found dead in her apartment with some of her valuables missing. "If pastor Ajanaku had greeted me, he wouldn't have died" - Guru Maharaj Ji

Self proclaimed Messiah of the world, Guru Maharaj Ji in an exclusive chat, spoke on the repercussions that come when evil is spoken of him or disrespect is meted against his person. He said in the interview that the late Pastor Ajanaku who passed away in controversial circumstances last year August died as as result of his disrespect to him. When asked what his take is on the impression that his faithfuls are criminals, Guru Mahaj Ji saids "That is the work of people who wouldn't stop at anything in running you down. Take for instance Olanrewaju Adepoju is one of them, Pastor Ajanaku even Okotie. Many of them who distorted the truth that Maharaj Ji is this and that and they believe in it without even knowing that it is a trap. Even Idahosa, where are they today? Yes they offended the holyspirit that sent me here. The bible says know the truth and tell the truth. I remember when I went for a programme at NUJ Press Centre Ibadan and I met late Pastor Ajanaku, If he had said "goodmorning o Guru, that boy wouldnt have died. The moment he met this light and the light was for him to be saved. I want to tell you that things that are happening on the planet are not coincidence, it has been planned by the creator. If one abide with one mind, one will always escape the dangers and that was it. Things that he is not supposed to say, he started saying it and the problem started". When asked to elaborate on his statement about Pastor Ajanaku not greeting him and that leading to his death, Guru Maharaj Ji responded "He wouldn't have died. It is like this, when a human being is possessed it is just like ....let's take the case of Idahosa for example. When I was in Benin, they blocked my bus. He went further to say that the stature of the Oba of Benin is an Idol. No, dont do evil, that is it. You don't carry bible in your head, no, bible is not working in Europe, na nuclear bomb o. Bible is not working in Uganda, na bomb they work there. So in Pastor Ajanaku's case, he should have given me my respect the moment he saw me"
