Ebola Outbreak Linked To Consumption Of Bush Meat - Scientists

Scientists have linked the recent outbreak of Ebola — a disease that causes its victims to bleed to death – to the indiscriminate consumption of raw bush meat and other exotic animals. 

Bush meat is a known a delicacy in many parts of Nigeria. Indeed, many Nigerians cannot forget in a hurry its delicious aroma and taste in native soups, such as Egusi, Efo and Ofe Isla.
However, scientists say consumption and preparation of meat from forest animals, such as fruit bats, monkeys and chimpanzees is behind the transmission of Ebola, which has killed over 660 persons in the last six months in West Africa.

Lagoon Hospital Lagos Performs First Open Heart Surgery

Lagoon Hospital, in the Apapa area of Lagos state has successfully performed an open-heart surgery on a 59-year-old man, making it the first private hospital in the country to achieve such feat.
The three-hour operation was performed on Friday, July 25, at the ultra-modern operating theatre suites of the hospital by a team of home-based Ni­gerian health practitioners.
The Cardiac Surgery Group was led by Dr. Bode Falase, visiting consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Lagoon Hospital and Dr. Onyekwelu Nzewi, a consultant cardiac surgeon at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, United Kingdom (UK).
They were supported by cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, physiologists and operating theatre nurses.
The 59-year-old man successfully had a quadruple vessel coronary artery bypass surgery.
Speaking on the achievement, the leader of the group, Falase, thanked Lagoon Hospital for the opportunity to start the open-heart programme.
"The surgery and the care the patient received were therefore the same as would obtain in any other top health care facility abroad, making Lagoon Hospital a viable alternative to travelling abroad for the same surgery," he said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Major Ganesh Kale (retd), said: “As a private hospital in Nigeria, we are committed to providing excel­lent care for our patients and will continue to ensure that complex operations like open heart surgery, major joint replacements and minimal access surgery are available in the country, so Nigerians do not need to travel abroad for these procedures.”

Open heart surgery is any surgery where the chest is opened and surgery is done on the heart muscle, valves, arteries, or other parts of the heart (such as the aorta). The term "open" means that the chest is "cut" open.
The first open heart surgery in a teaching hospital in Nigeria was successfully carried out at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo State in October 2013.

Mercy Johnson, who got married to her husband, Prince Odianosen Okojie, in 2011, gave birth to their first child Purity Okojie in December, 2012 in the United States.

600 Spesially Trained Soldiers To Be Deployed In Damboa

Six hundred specially trained commandos would be deployed in the troubled area of Damboa, Borno State, according to the leadership of the Nigerian military.
According to a security source, the military personnel were specially trained within the country for the purpose of strengthening the security presence in Damboa, which is considered as one of the most volatile areas in the North-East.

Boko Haram Bombs Aminu Kano College Of Islamic Studies

Suspected members of the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram has reportedly bombed Aminu Kano College of Islamic Studies.

 

Leadership reports that the explosion happened at about 2.45pm this afternoon.

 

The college was established in 1976 as a training centre under Kano state judiciary in order to train middle level personnel for the Area Courts (now Shari’a courts). It is located within the school for Arabic Studies (SAS), Kano as its temporary site with only four teaching staff and twenty students.

President Jonathan Swears In Four New Ministers

President Jonathan has sworn-in four new ministers, who have been cleared by the National Assembly. The new ministers are Ibrahim Shekarau; a former Kano State governor, who decamped from APC to PDP, Stephen Oru, Adedayo Adeyeye and Abdul Bulama.

The President announced Mr. Shekarau as the new Education Minister; Mr. Adeyeye was named Minister of State for Works; Mr. Oru, Minister of Niger Delta; and Mr. Bulama, Minister of Science and Technology.

He also announced that the current Minister of Works, Bashir Yuguda, will now be the Minster of State for Finance and substantive Minister of National Planning.

N169m Fraud: EFCC Arraigns Ex- Delta Scholarship Board Scribe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, July 3, 2014 arraigned the former executive secretary of Delta State Scholarship Board, Peter Amromanoh and the chief accountant, Eloho Otiede before Justice C. O Emifoniye of the Delta State High Court, Asaba on a 5-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing. Amromanoh is alleged to have abused his office by approving a sum of N36m (Thirty-Six Million Naira) which is above his official approval limit of N1million. Also, alongside Otiede, they fraudulently paid bursary to “ghost” students.
