Obanikoro To Face Senate Over Ministerial Nomination

According to Daily Independent, despite the controversy arising from the inclusion of former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, as one of the nominees for ministerial appointments by Jonathan, the Senate has concluded plans to begin screening of the nominees today.

Others in the list include Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa), Nicholas Akise Ada (Benue), Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu, Fidelis Nwankwo (Ebonyi), Hauwa’u Lawan (Jigawa), Kenneth Kobani (Rivers) and Joel Danlami Ikenya (Taraba).

The president, in a letter addressed to the president of the Senate, David Mark, dated February 16, 2016, requested the red chamber to confirm the eight ministerial nominees in accordance with section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

He also included in the letter the curriculum vitae of each nominee for consideration by the Senate, adding that the lawmakers would give express attention to the consideration and confirmation of the nominees’ appointment.

Close sources confirmed to Daily Independent that the screening of the nominees is further occasioned by the limited period they have to service the outgoing administration before its expiration on May 29.

President Jonathan has faced criticism for the inclusion of Obanikoro on the ministerial nominees’ list, due to his alleged involvement in the rigging of the Ekiti elections, as revealed in a leaked meeting with other politicians
