EFCC accuses ex-naval captain of N90m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arraigned a retired Navy Captain, Jerry Ogbonna, before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja for allegedly defrauding two banks of N90m

The 63-year-old Ogbonna was arraigned alongside his company, Obyke Consult Limited, for allegedly defrauding Fidelity Bank and Diamond Bank of N45m each between April and August 2012.

According to the anti-graft agency, Ogbonna claimed that the money was meant for mobilisation fee for the Department of Petroleum Resources.

Ogbonna, who is facing two counts of stealing and fraud before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, A.A. Ossai, however, pleaded with the court to allow his client to remain in the EFCC custody pending when his bail application would be heard.

Justice Ipaye granted Ogbonna’s prayer to remain in the EFCC custody before adjourning the matter till July 4 and 5 for trial.
