COMRADE ADEWALE COUNSELS NIGERIAN STUDENTS ON UNIONISM

The Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Comrade Ayodele Adewale played host to the Executive of the Students Union Government, Adeniran Ogunsanya, College of Education, Ijanikin today.

The visit was at the instance of the students, whose aim was to learn more about students unionism with a view to restoring its lost glory .

Comrade Adewale in his interaction with the students, counseled them and took them through memory lane of how Students' Unionism started in Nigeria and what it entails. In his words “the problem with students’ unionism in Nigeria now is the lack of defined goals, or rather, a departure from its revolutionary tradition.

In the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, Nigerian student unionism and activism were very much well defined. They do not take to the streets just for the fun of it.”

He frowned at the way majority of  Nigerian students have turned unionism to gangsterism, while calling on students’ body in Nigeria to change its style of pressing home its demands.

The Local Government boss also advised the representatives of the students to meet with other staff unions and highly placed individuals in the Lagos society with a view to resolving the school fees issue.

Comrade Ojoare Olamilekan, the President of the Students' Union, in his address thanked the Executive Chairman for his words of advice, noting that they are always happy to listen to his words of encouragement.

“He is indeed an exemplary leader and a blessing to the Nigerian  students' movement in general.”
